Special Melted Products are one of the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity Christmas Snowflake Sponsors this year and we are delighted to be able to contribute to this amazing cause.

Look out for the SMP Snowflake on the City Hall!

We are very pleased to join the Made in Sheffield community, as license holders.

As world-class manufacturers of specialty steels and nickel based super alloys that are used in critical applications for the Aerospace, Oil & Gas and Nuclear industries, we were founded in the Steel City and have remained here for almost 200-years. A rich heritage that we are extremely proud of.

SMP appoints Andy Richardson as its new Managing Director, 24 years after he first joined the business as a Laboratory Metallurgist.

Andy’s career began in 1991 at Firth Vickers Foundry, where he successfully completed his metallurgy traineeship. He has since amassed over 30 years’ industry experience, developing his career in several roles that has seen him progress from Technician to MD.

Andy’s appointment signifies the organisation’s growth plans, seeing him responsible for the strategic direction of the company – with a specific focus on maintaining its high level of quality whilst growing market share, profitability and increasing output.

Commenting on his appointment, Andy said:

“This is an ideal opportunity for me to bring together my skills and wide-ranging experience to drive forward our business.”

“Whilst the company may have experienced a change of name and ownership, its longevity within the marketplace speaks volumes about its reputation. I feel incredibly privileged to be part of a company that is globally renowned for its technical ability and product quality, and I look forward to driving this reputation forward”.

We wish Andy the very best in his new role.

Special Melted Products is pleased to announce the appointment of Claire Rowley as Commercial Manager. She has joined at a very exciting time following the Mutares Acquisition earlier this year and will contribute to the growth of SMP as it continues to extend business activities. Claire brings experience in a broad range of international market sectors, including aerospace, oil and gas, defence and nuclear industries. Her career began in 2003 with Firth Rixson and she has spent the past 19 years working within the forging and metals industry, in a commercially focused role.

Welcome to the team!

In response to OEM demand for a material that is cost competitive, high strength and gives excellent corrosion resistance, SMP have redeveloped their standard Staballoy material. By adding a ESR melt step to the manufacturing process the corrosion and fatigue properties are enhanced, whilst attaining a minimum yield strength of 140 ksi. 734 is now successfully used in bottom hole assemblies by a major oilfield service OEM. This is a great example of how SMP works collaborative with customers and end-users to find solutions for the most challenging issues.

Munich, 3 March 2022 – Mutares SE & Co. KGaA (ISIN: DE000A2NB650) has signed an agreement to acquire the Sheffield Operations of Allegheny Technologies Incorporated (ATI).

This acquisition will strengthen the Engineering & Technology segment as a new platform investment. The closing of the transaction is expected by the end of the first quarter of 2022, subject to the satisfaction of customary regulatory approvals and other conditions. Rebranding of the entity as Special Melted Products Limited will follow.

The operation is located in Sheffield, UK, employs around 190 people and has expected revenues of approx. EUR 80 million for 2022.
