I joined Special Melted Products Ltd in 1996 as a Product Metallurgist. During my time at SMP I have been fortunate enough to be offered a number of challenging roles. I have had a diverse range of responsibilities from the production of materials used in nuclear reactors and aircraft engines to managing the UKAS and NADCAP accredited Test Laboratory.

In 2016 I was promoted to the position of Technical Manager and am now one of a number of women on the SMP Leadership Team.

In 2017, I approached SMP because I wanted to work for an organisation that prides itself on the quality of its products and service. SMP has helped me by providing countless opportunities to grow and develop. The result being that I had originally taken on the role as a Quality Inspector, to then become a Team Leader. Now I work as a Quality Engineer alongside being a Staff Representative, Fire Marshal and First Aider.

I made the decision to join SMP in February 2020 as I wanted to experience working in HR for a completely different sector to retail. My first year came with all of the challenges that HR and businesses were faced with during the pandemic as we all had to navigate unchartered waters. The whole team worked together closely to ensure we had a strong strategy to recover quickly from that year. In my second year I undertook a secondment where I worked within the Planning & Logistics department for half of my time. This allowed me to learn the production processes in more detail and how the different departments worked together, which in turn benefited my understanding of the business from a HR perspective.

I have found SMP is very supportive of those who want to develop themselves through further training in order to benefit the business.

I joined the company in 1976 from school on a 5-year apprenticeship. Throughout my time with SMP I have enjoyed various training, including electrical and fitting finishing in the toolroom. I then moved to testing where I have worked for many years. SMP is a great working environment, everyone pulls together as a team. As a local union representative, I have seen positive changes in working relationships with the management teams and commitment to health and safety.
