SMP has three VAR and two ESR secondary re-melting furnaces.
All products produced by SMP are either double or triple melted, utilizing the VAR and ESR step. This delivers products with higher integrity offering greater levels of corrosion and fatigue performance in the given application. A range of ingot sizes can be produced to suit the relevant product’s forging process, which range from 12-inch diameter to 34-inch diameter. SMP’s maximum ingot weight on either VAR or ESR is 20 metric tonnes.

Heating and rotary forging
SMP has a 1400 tonne SXP-65 GFM precision rotary forging machine.
The SXP-65 can take an maximum input size of 650mm and 8 metric tonnes with a work piece run-out length in excess of eleven meters. The machine is complemented by a range of heating furnaces, water quench facility, in-line hot cutting and off-line product annealing furnaces. The nature of the SXP-65 machine means that SMP can produce round, square, rectangular and step-forged products with a high degree of precision and tolerances.
Housed in the world-class precision machining facility (PMF) SMP operates two TBT deephole borers that were commissioned in 2010.
The machines offer extensive boring capability to high levels of accuracy including bottle boring and hammer peening. The machines were specifically commissioned for the production of oilfield components, therefore having 10-meter length capability.

CNC Lathe
Housed in the PMF is also a range of lathes offering machining capabilities
This includes three bespoke Gurutzpe lathes specifically designed for machining oilfield components and three Doosan Puma CNC lathes dedicated to the production of aerospace mainline engine shafts. All lathes have a live tooling function offering further machining capabilities.
SMP has a large billet conditioning facility that processes forged billets and bars that are produced by the GFM SXP-65 and other key forging partners.
Dependent on the product family the billet conditioning shop can heat treat, straighten, peel, test and inspect a large range of products. For the aerospace grades SMP has two large immersion ultrasonic inspection tanks. The heat treatment furnaces have a length capability up to 5.7 meters and are complemented by two water quench tanks.
